History and Mission
The Italian University Council for the History of Religions (in Italian, Consulta Universitaria per la Storia delle Religioni – CUSR) was established on 27 March 2018 as a permanent consultative body bringing together scholars working in the academic study of religions at Italian universities.
The Council includes professors and researchers affiliated with the Italian academic field HIST-04/A – History of Religions, and aims to provide a stable forum for discussion, coordination, and shared reflection on research and teaching in the field. Since its foundation, the CUSR has promoted dialogue on the institutional, methodological, and theoretical challenges facing the study of religions within the broader framework of the humanities.
Through its activities, the CUSR supports the role of historical and critical approaches to religion in academic research, higher education, and public discourse. It also acts as an institutional interlocutor in its relations with national bodies such as the Ministry of University and Research, the National University Council (CUN), the National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research (ANVUR), as well as with other national and international scholarly associations.
In addition to fostering scientific initiatives and academic cooperation, the Council pays particular attention to issues of teaching and training, methodological reflection in the history of religions, and the professional prospects of graduates in the field. In this way, the CUSR seeks to contribute to the development and visibility of the academic study of religions in Italy and beyond.
